Japanese-Speaking Guide / Driver (Long-Term)

Earth and Sky, a leading astro-tourism provider located at the heart of the world's largest dark sky park, the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, is actively seeking the right candidate to help us enhance and improve our Japanese customer services — we're after someone who has a solid command of the Japanese language and culture as well as the ability to drive a passenger vehicle for Japanese guests.

Duties include operating professional telescopes, using powerful lasers, freely designing and delivering entertaining and informative interpretations of the Southern Hemisphere's night sky, while being an integral, valued contributor to any new business developments. In addition to night-time duties you will also be an active participant in day-time tours of the observatory and/or responsible for occasionally conducting/overseeing nature walks and shuttle services.

Applicants for this position should have some tourism experience, a background in astronomy, a tertiary education in some field of science, a valid P-endorsement on their driver's license and ideally possess knowledge about the Mackenzie Region / Dark Sky Reserve. Japanese proficiency is a must.

One of the most important roles will be to oversee the continual development of first-rate displays, placards, brochures, t-shirts, article layouts, and Earth & Sky promotional materials. This individual will be expected to help Earth & Sky expand into the increasingly important arena of online marketing engagement through video.

The successful candidate for this position should have at least two years or more of teaching experience (preferably of various age groups from primary to secondary school); a tertiary education in some field of graphic design and/or media production; a solid understanding of and some real-life experience with the print pre-press process; a profound interest in science; a full and valid driver's license; and ideally possess knowledge about the Mackenzie Region / Dark Sky Reserve. Astronomical awareness and knowledge is required. We’re interested in pinpointing the person who can most effectively educate, entertain, and inspire our mix of international and local guests through many different media.

Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese Astronomy Guide (Long-Term)

Lake Tekapo is a fast-growing tourist destination and those of us at Earth and Sky are right at the heart of it all. We’re looking for the right candidate to support the Operational Manager of Asian Markets in delivering the finest experience possible to the steadily increasing number of Chinese guests who visit Mt. John University Observatory, Cowan’s Observatory, and the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark-Sky Reserve.

Fancy yourself as a personable, gregarious, knowledgeable, team-orientated, positive, and highly motivated person who would excel at guiding? Can you picture yourself with a green laser pointing out the gems of the night sky — planets, galaxies, stars, etc.? Do you dream of controlling a powerful, professional telescope? Relish the chance to grapple with scientific facts and mysteries?

A chance of a lifetime awaits those who join us in conducting our Mt. John University Observatory and Cowan’s Observatory tours. The successful candidate will be a confident public speaker and must be completely proficient in Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese Chinese, and English. Some science education is required. Astronomical awareness and knowledge is highly beneficial. We’re interested in pinpointing the person who can most effectively educate, entertain, and inspire our mix of international and local guests.
